O'Neil was a student in high-school when she auditioned in 2005 for the third Canadian Idol season. Her vocal performance impressed the panel of judges and she was voted into the 100th round. O'Neil's performance was highly praised by the judges. But, O'Neil suffered a significant defeat during top 10 and Top 9 final weeks when she was voted for in the bottom 3, top 3, and the bottom 2. The judges were stunned by this and instructed the crowd to choose contestants similar to Melissa O'Neil, who had the strongest singing skills. With consistently excellent performances from that point forward, O'Neil never again finished among the bottom three. The two other performances she gave on September 7,2005, where O'Neil made it into the final two of the contest. Werner said that in the morning, newspapers would report O'Neil's victory over Rex Goudie as she became the 3rd Canadian Idol and first female champion. O'Neil was promptly congratulated by Canadian PM Paul Martin for winning Canadian Idol.
