Her parents are Dennis Alan Taylor an ex-banker and Jennifer Marina Joy psychologist. Her father, an native of Argentina with Scottish and English roots is her maternal grandmother. The Spanish and mother who is English speaks was her mother. Taylor-Joy is one of the five children. Four of them are from Taylor's father's prior marriage. Her family is initially located in Buenos Aires, but moved to Victoria in the year she turned 6. Taylor Joy admitted that the transition from Buenos Aires, to Victoria was difficult and she did not study English, hoping to go back to Argentina. Hill House, a school within the same district that Northlands had to enroll her. Later, she enrolled in Queen's Gate School where she trained in ballet and appeared in school productions. She dropped out of the high school aged 16 to focus on her acting profession. Taylor-Joy was a child actress who was certain she would be one. Her dreams were realized when Sarah Doukas, the founder of Storm Management offered her a modeling job.
